Yolov5 to yolov11

I am currently using a YOLOv5 model and have decided to migrate to YOLOv11. The training process is running without any errors or complaints, but I’d like a second opinion from experts. Below, I’ve included the .yaml configuration file I’m using.

My goal isn’t to address errors but rather to learn and gain insights. I’d appreciate it if someone with expertise could review the configuration and provide feedback on any potential concerns or areas for improvement when using it with YOLOv11.

I believe most of those modules are custom. Without knowing what they do, it’s hard to tell. As long as it works for you, I guess it’s alright.

Another question, how can i specify the weight output model, for example to weight to match the yolo11 model. I try to find information online but it is not clear.

Hello @mikelazos,

Great to hear that you’re transitioning from YOLOv5 to YOLOv11! Your provided .yaml configuration definitely reflects some customization, and it’s encouraging to see you’re exploring the advanced capabilities of YOLO models.

Feedback on Your YOLOv11 Configuration

  1. Backbone and Head Modules:
The use of modules like FocalNext, GhostConv, and QARepNeXt suggests you’re implementing custom components, which is excellent for tailoring the model to specific needs. However, ensure these modules are properly defined and compatible with YOLOv11’s architecture. YOLOv11 introduces an enhanced backbone and neck for feature extraction, so you may want to compare your custom backbone’s efficiency and accuracy against YOLO11’s default configuration.

  2. Anchors:
YOLO11 is an anchorless architecture so you can delete this section.

  3. Depth and Width Multiples:
Your depth (0.33) and width (0.25) multiples correspond to a lightweight model configuration. This is great for resource-constrained environments but may trade off accuracy for speed. If computational resources permit, experiment with larger multiples (e.g., 0.50, 0.75) to assess performance improvements.

  4. Custom Detect Head (NADHDetect):
If this is a custom detection head, ensure it aligns with YOLOv11’s adaptability across tasks such as segmentation or pose estimation. Compare its performance against YOLOv11’s default Detect module, which has been optimized for efficiency and accuracy.

Additional Resources

  • If you’d like to revisit YOLOv11’s default configurations to cross-verify, check the YOLOv11 Documentation.
  • For exporting models after training to formats like ONNX or TensorRT, refer to the Export Guide.

Let me know if you have further questions or need more guidance. Best of luck with your custom YOLOv11 implementation—sounds like an exciting project! :rocket:

thank you so much for your amazing reply. you really help me to learn. and i have to learn tons more.

Another question i have, the training saves the weights, can i specify a version so the weights can be saved to work with yolo11? Also how can i save the weights in a format to be compatible with yolo11? in general how to weights are saved for the specific yolo version? do you know?

Thank you for your kind words, but all credit goes to the YOLO community and Ultralytics team for their continued efforts!

Regarding your question, YOLO11 automatically saves trained weights in the format compatible with the version you are training (e.g., .pt for PyTorch). To ensure compatibility, simply load the YOLO11 model configuration (e.g., yolo11n.yaml or yolo11n.pt) before starting the training process. The weights will then align with YOLO11’s architecture and features.

If you need to export the trained weights to a specific format (e.g., ONNX, TensorRT, etc.), you can use the export function:

from ultralytics import YOLO

model = YOLO("yolo11n.pt")  # Load your trained YOLO11 model
model.export(format="onnx") # Export to ONNX format

For more details on export options, refer to the Export Documentation. Let me know if you have further questions!

My issue is, i have a model that is using yolo5 and i want to migrate to yolo11. I have made the changes but the weights are still saved as yolo5, although i am using yolo11.pt. Should i share here the code to read and maybe give me your insight?

Sharing your code will be helpful, however you will need to completely refrain your model using YOLO11 model weights and the ultralytics python package. The old YOLOv5 repo and weights are not compatible with the new library or model structure, that’s why a new repository was made.

To save weights specifically for YOLO11 and ensure compatibility, you can use the YOLO11 framework’s default saving mechanism, as it is designed to manage the format and structure inherently. The weights are typically saved in .pt format. If you’re using the Ultralytics library’s train() function, it will automatically save the weights as last.pt and best.pt in the designated --save-dir. No further configuration is usually required for YOLO11 compatibility.

If you are encountering issues where weights appear to be YOLOv5-specific despite using YOLO11, ensure the following:

  1. You are using the YOLO11 model class (YOLO("yolo11n.pt")) and training pipeline rather than any legacy codepaths.
  2. The cfg file and model initialization explicitly use YOLO11 configurations, as you seem to be doing.
  3. Test the saved weights by reloading them into a YOLO11 model instance to confirm compatibility.

For further clarification, feel free to share the specific steps you’re using to save and load the weights. If you would like more details on the standard saving behavior, refer to YOLO11 Training Documentation.

@mikelazos what are you aiming to accomplish? Why write all the code? You only need to use the code from the official repo to use YOLO11. You’re asking how to do y but haven’t provided context or the x you’re looking to achieve.

Hello BurhanQ, no reason to be upset, i am learning. What i try to achieve is simple, i have a modified yolo model that is using yolo5 and i want to migrate to yolo11. I have checked the available documentation and i decided to write in this forum so to learn from the people who have more experience with the yolo model. my code still saves the weight in yolo5 format and i want to save it in yolo11 format.

For one more time you are wonderful and thank you very very much. i also wish you a beautiful day. i will check the output again with yolo11.

@mikelazos no one is upset at all, we’re all learning something. I asked your goal because it was not obvious from your initial posts, and if you see the link I shared, there is good reason to understand your goal not the issue you’re trying to solve.

If you’re model is saving weights as YOLOv5, then you’re using the incorrect repository. You need to use the code from the ultralytics repository for YOLO11. Once you clone the repo, you’ll need to add your custom modules to the appropriate files in ultralytics/nn/modules/, add any relevant logic to ultralytics/nn/tasks.py, and include your custom configuration in ultralytics/cfg/models/11 which should be modification of the yolo11.yaml configuration that includes your custom modules/settings.

Once you’ve done this, your trained models will use the YOLO11 weights when saved. It’s not a small amount of work, but that’s the work required to accomplish your goal. Good luck and feel free make a post if you run into a specific issue that you have questions about.
